LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A local disabled veteran is getting a major home makeover thanks to a group of volunteers.
The Remodelor's Council of the Home Builders Association of Louisville, Active Heroes, and Team Home Depot joined forces Saturday to remodel the home of Army veteran Michael Hayes off Taylorsville Road.
Hayes lost his leg in Iraq in 2006 after an improvised explosive device hit his Humvee. He also suffered burns to his body.
"I never really expected certain things when I came home," said Hayes, "but to know there are people that just dig the fact that you are willing to do what you did, man or woman, they care about it."
The project will impact nearly every room in Hayes' home and outside.
Pat Wissing of Wissing Contracting Company said everything was being painted, the countertops were going and the work in the bathroom was being finished up.
The remodel started Friday and everything is expected to be done by Sunday.
