The Principal of Campbell Ridge Elementary School in Alexandria ran a little over a full marathon Sunday to raise money for cancer research.

Anthony Mazzei ran 27 miles down US 27 on January 27 to raise money for a cause close to his heart.

Several members of Mazzei's family have been affected by cancer including his grandfather and uncle. The principal took it upon his own shoulders to raise money for a disease that affects so many.

"25 years ago when my grandfather died of cancer, there were not a whole lot of treatments available," said Mazzei. "Now, there is so much more available. People survive cancer all of the time. It got me thinking,  25 years from now- what could that be? What could happen then? It's the research that will do it and [running] is a great way to support it."

Mazzei asked friends and relatives to donate $27 to the cause. Nearly 100 donors later, Mazzei raised $5.3 thousand.

Mazzei will donate the money to the U.S. Cancer Federation.
