Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The University of Louisville surpassed its long term goals to save energy on campus.

According to numbers from 2011, the university said fuel use on the main Belknap Campus dropped almost 50 percent and electricity use dropped 27 percent since the project's inception. When the effort began in 2009, engineers predicted fuel consumption would drop by 40 percent and electricity use would drop by at least 20 percent.

The $21 million initiative partners UofL with Siemens Industry to update heating and cooling strategies, cut water consumption and improve lighting efficiency.

The initiative is paid for by the savings from lower energy costs.
