Cuts coming for state funded child care

Posted: Updated:

FRANKFORT, KY (WAVE) - Big cuts are on the way for state funded child care programs.

Thursday, the Kentucky Department of Community Based Services is facing a nearly $87 million budget shortfall. Because of the shortfall several programs will be cut to close the gap.

The Child Care Assistance Program will be hit the hardest. The program provides financial help to low-income families who cannot afford child care while parents work.

The program will not take any new applications until at least June of 2014.

Money is also being cut for Kinship Care, which provides expense money to relatives caring for neglected children.

The new rules limiting who is eligible for the Child Care Assistance Program go into effect in July.
