CLARKSVILLE, IN (WAVE) - Indiana's Attorney General came to Clarksville Thursday to discuss what is going on at the state level to keep students safe.
Greg Zoeller stressed the importance of cultivating good relationships between law enforcement and youngsters early. Zoeller said the main focus is for each district to enhance safety of students no matter how they do it.
"I always advocate home rule," said Zoeller, "I don't think Indianapolis is the place to answer the question of what needs of the local school corporation are."
The Indiana General Assembly is considering Senate Bill 1. If passed, the bill would provide state money in the form of matching grants to school systems so they could hire officers.
Zoeller said federal help could be on the way, given how the Newtown tragedy has thrust school safety back into the national spotlight.
