LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - After weeks of intense training and preparation, 21 men and women took the oath Friday morning to become officers at the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections.

The job is often a thankless one as the officers are tasked with securing and maintaining the Louisville Metro jail system and that can mean some dangerous work. But the danger didn't stop Shauntina Winston, a former hair stylist.

Winston said she wants to set a good example for her kids.

"To the females that maybe intimidated by the role, it is challenging but it can be done," said Winston. "It's a great career for single females, females that have children. You can be a role model for them as well."

Now that graduation is out of the way, the new officer face another four weeks of field training.
