VA looking to help more homeless veterans

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Helping homeless veterans find a permanent place to stay was the mission of a summit Monday at Metro United Way.

Organizers say they've done a pretty good job of helping newly homeless veterans. This year they're going deeper.

"This year, we are targeting the chronically homeless veterans that are really hard to reach," said Todd Dedas, VA Homeless Veterans Coordinator.  "Those that sleep out, that camp out, or have been in shelters for a year or more."

VA programs use aggressive outreach to find homeless vets. Among the steps used are going into the campsites, setting up transitional housing and helping their clients through each step of the process.
