The injured dog.JEFFERSONVILLE, IN (WAVE) - Police are searching for a driver who crashed a car into a gas main and caused an explosion that left three people homeless and injured a small dog. Officers said the driver ran away from the scene.
It happened around 2:20 a.m. Wednesday at Watt and 9th Street in Jeffersonville. Investigators said fire engulfed the duplex. A couple, who were already awake at home, lived in one part of the house. Another person lived in the other half. Neighbors said he wasn't there during the fire.
Crews believe the fire started after a vehicle ran over a gas line. Vapors fueled the flames that ultimately leveled the structure.
"When I arrived on scene about 50 percent of the structure was well involved in fire," said Deputy Chief Josh Thompson of the Jeffersonville Fire Department. "The remaining part of the structure was filled with smoke and it was being fed by the natural gas leak. At that point there was nothing we could do until we got gas shut off."
A couple saved their two dogs, but one of the pets has been admitted to Blue Cross Hospital for Animals.
"Time will heal most of the cuts and scrapes. The dog's heart rate is good. His chest is good. He's got burn places on his body and of course he's been through a terrible ordeal, but he'll be ok," Dr. Damon Campbell said.
The driver abandoned the vehicle involved. Jeffersonville Police are searching for the persons or people involved.
