SOCHI, RUSSIA (WAVE) – The opening
ceremony of the XXII Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia is one year away: February
6, 2014.
With the clock ticking down, the site
of the future games remains an ongoing construction site.
"The is the biggest construction site
in the world, with 70,000 workmen working 24 hours a day," said Dmitry
Chernyshenko, President and CEO of the Sochi Olympic Organizing Committee.
At first glance, Sochi, which is on
the shores of the Black Sea, doesn't appear to be an ideal spot for the Winter
Olympics. It's actually a summer seaside resort. But its mountains are brimming
with snow.
Organizers say the Olympic Park will
be the most compact winter games park ever, and the jewel in the crown will be
the Bolshoi Ice Palace, home to ice hockey, Russia's national sport.
The 2014 Winter Olympics will air
exclusively on WAVE 3 and the networks of NBC. Click here for NBC's 2014 Winter
Olympics website.
