Two hikers visiting from Florida are safe after spending the night on an off-limits Koolau trail.
Honolulu Fire Department spokesman Capt. Gary Lum said the hikers came down the "Stairway to Heaven" trail themselves.
Chris Suhr and Liane Towel called for help at around 7 p.m. Thursday after they became lost on the Moanalua Valley side of the trail.
Officials from the Honolulu Fire Department said it was too dark and dangerous for crews to try and rescue the pair last night, citing cloud cover and the possibility of high-tension utility lines.
The two were cited for trespassing, their court appearance is set for March 12.
Stairway to Heaven also known as Haiku Stairs is one of Oahu's most popular "forbidden" trails.
The Navy built the stairs during World War II to access radio equipment at the mountain summit.
The trail has been closed since it was deemed dangerous in 1987. The 3,922 stairs were repaired, but neighbors complained about parking and littering. The trail was never re-opened. The city spends $51,000 a year for a security guard posted at the bottom of the stairs.
