Doctors ordered her legs amputated and gave her just a 15 percent chance to live, but Brittany Leedham is now about to graduate from Middle Tennessee State University and start a career.
She is a miracle from top to bottom, and Leedham tells her story for one big reason - she hopes every time she tells it, she causes one teenager to slow down.
It was Thanksgiving 2008 when Leedham - a senior swim and dive captain at Father Ryan High School - was a passenger in a horrible car crash that killed her boyfriend.
Monday, she walked into Independence High School in a skirt, clearly showing but not hiding from her scars. Twenty-two surgeries and more than four years after the accident, Leedham is walking and talking to any teenager who will listen.
"If I can just make one of them stop and think twice before texting and driving, it will be all worth it," she said.
She spoke to a driver's education class at Independence with an important message that they are not invincible.
Leedham lost half her blood in the crash but gained a purpose at a young age. She also gained a future career. In May, she takes her recreational therapy exams.
"When I was a patient, I got to participate in recreational therapy, and for that one hour a day I didn't have to focus on walking. I could focus on anything else. It was a break from reality when I could be Brittany and play a game," she said.
So charming, so possessed and so comfortable in front of students, Leedham warned them some of her story is graphic, but she is now able to use jokes and asked them to laugh along with her.
