Cleveland Police now have body cameras

CLEVELAND, OH (WOIO) -

19 Action News Reporter Ed Gallek has learned Cleveland Police now have 32 body cameras.

The cameras are actually worn on the bodies of the officers and can record every encounter.

City Council members and many in the community have complained Cleveland Police don't record enough of what officers see and do, and it often leads to questions about what happened.

The city only has a small number of dashboard cameras in their cars.

Chief Michael McGrath recently told council the department is deciding on the numbers and  kinds of cameras to buy.

Many small departments have cameras in all of their cars and Solon Police have been using the body cameras for some time.

The chief's office says its 32 body cameras will be spread out city wide with one assigned to the police gym unit and one assigned to the homicide unit.

The cameras were acquired for testing and training prior to purchase.
