LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A shooting late Monday morning in the Greater Cane Run area has a man fighting for his life. Louisville Metro Police were called to Thorobred Apartments in the 4900 block of Saddlebrook Court around 11:30 a.m.

Detectives and police dogs combed the shooting scene looking for any clues they could get. The victim, a man in his mid 20s, was shot inside his own home.

"My neighbor was shot in the chest and his wife and three-year-old daughter were in the apartment," said John Gall. "He was lying in the living room floor right by the front door."

Gall said he was coming from the store when he witnessed the commotion and saw the maintenance man chasing a man away from the apartment into a nearby building. While that was happening Gall checked on his neighbor.

"He was moaning," Gall said, "he was real white, real pale, it didn't look good."

LMPD detectives continue to search for answers.

"I'm not sure that we have a suspect at this point," said Dwight Mitchell, a LMPD spokesperson, "there's no suspect in custody at this time, however, we have questions some individuals and what fruit that yields we simply don't know yet."

Residents are fearful that a gunman is on the loose.

"It's kind of scary for real especially because there's a kid inside," said Joshua Griffin, another neighbor.

One neighbor said the complex has become increasingly violent and he fears for his family's safety.

"I can't afford nowhere else right now, it does make you think about where you live," said Gall.

LMPD is asking anyone with information to call the anonymous crime tip line at 574-LMPD (5673).

Louisville Metro Police Chief Steve Conrad has asked his men and women to wear mourning bands for a former officer shot in the line of duty.  It was more than four decades ago when Detective Bobby Branham was critically wounded.  His widow, Mary Carroll Burnett tells us, her husband had a lot of scar tissue from multiple surgeries after the 1972 shooting and those complications led to his death May 14.
