CINCINNATI (AP) -
Cincinnati officials have proposed legislation requiring rental properties to have enhanced smoke detectors, a move driven by the death of two University of Cincinnati students following a New Year's Day fire at a rented house near campus.
The students were sleeping on the house's third floor and were fatally injured when deadly smoke from a smoldering fire on the second floor went up the stairs.
The proposed ordinance filed Tuesday by Cincinnati Vice Mayor Roxanne Qualls and Councilman P.G. Sittenfeld would require photoelectric smoke detectors in all rental properties in Cincinnati.
Qualls and Sittenfeld say the ionization smoke detectors currently required by the city are better at detecting fast-moving flames than smoke.
Qualls and Sittenfeld say photoelectric detectors use a light beam that more easily detects smoke.
