LMPD responds when student takes pellet gun aboard JCPS bus

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Louisville Metro Police responded when a pellet gun was found in a student's possession aboard a school bus Thursday afternoon, according to a spokesperson to Jefferson County Public Schools.

Other students were on board JCPS bus #0326 when the incident happened around 3:10 p.m. at 36th and Grand in Louisville's Chickasaw neighborhood. The students attend Ramsey Middle School.

JCPS spokesperson Ben Jackey described the gun as an Airsoft pellet gun. Investigators on the scene initially weren't sure whether the gun was real or a toy.

According to the website hobbytron.com, Airsoft guns shoot 6mm round pellets and are exact replicas of real guns. "Some manufacturers even use real mold of the originals in order to create the look, feel and even weight of their real-steel counterpart," the website states.

LMPD officers were called off the scene when it was discovered the gun wasn't real. Jackey said the student would be disciplined by the school district.

The bus eventually continued on its route after the student suspect was removed and the gun was determined to be an Airsoft gun.
