COLERAIN, OH (FOX19) -
Students at Colerain High School are learning the dangers of
texting while driving first hand.
AT&T is challenging local teens with its
auto simulator. Each student gets behind the wheel with special goggles
that simulate the effects of distracted driving. Representatives from the cell
phone carrier and Ohio State Highway patrol will talk with students about the
risks of taking your eyes off the road to text.
"Our goal is to save lives,"
said Mark Romito, Director External Affairs, AT&T Ohio. "AT&T
applauds the efforts of the Ohio General Assembly – as well as Governor Kasich
– on their efforts to pass and sign into law House Bill 99, the statewide
texting while driving ban, which took effect last fall."
For the last six months drivers caught texting and driving
have only received warnings, but starting Friday teen drivers caught texting
behind the wheel face a $150 ticket and possibly have their license suspended
for 60 days. Ohio joins 39 other states that ban texting while driving.
