On September 14, 2012, Cedric Francis was driving a 2001 Chevy Trailblazer on Denison Avenue at West 31st Street in Cleveland when he struck 12-year-old Katie Adkins while she attempted to cross the street.
After striking Adkins, Francis, 23, fled the scene. Adkins was taken to a nearby hospital where she was treated for multiple injuries. She has since been released.
On November 4, 2012, Cleveland Police observed a Chevy Trailblazer parked illegally and noticed front end damage to the vehicle. The vehicle was then towed to the impound lot where parts collected at the scene of the accident were matched to the suspect's vehicle. Francis was arrested on November 6, 2012.
On January 24, 2013, Francis pleaded guilty to one count of failure to stop after an accident.
In court Francis apologized to Katie, her family and to all parties involved but the judge told him he did not think the apology was sincere and imposed the maximum.
