TAYLORSVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Two Spencer County High School students are facing
serious charges for having a stolen, unloaded handgun at school, according to
the Spencer County Sheriff's Office.
Investigators said a 16-year-old student stole the gun from a family member,
brought the weapon aboard the school bus he rides Tuesday morning and gave it to
a 15-year-old. Another student saw the gun in a backpack belonging to one of
the suspects and reported the incident to his or her parents, authorities said.
Deputies went to the suspects' homes to investigate. The students were
arrested at the school in Taylorsville on Wednesday morning. They are charged
with possession of a firearm on school property. The 16-year-old also is charged
with theft by unlawful taking. The 15-year-old is charged with receiving stolen
Investigators said the gun was found on private property in Spencer County
where it had been ditched.
Both suspects are lodged in a juvenile detention center in Elizabethtown.
A letter describing the incident will be sent home with parents on
