ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (WAVE) - A 6-month old baby is dead and police have the child's father in custody. They say he confessed to shaking the child because she would not stop crying.
Kosair Children's Hospital contacted the Elizabethtown Police Department on Tuesday after admitting the baby girl, Aleyah Williams. Medical staff said she had severe internal brain bleed. Detectives were told the child's injuries were the result of shaken baby syndrome.
Police say the infant was left in the care of her father, Barry W. Williams Jr., 21, of Elizabethtown. Williams was taken to Louisville Metro Police headquarters where he was interviewed by detectives. Police records state that Aleyah was "dropped on the floor and began crying." It goes on to say that Williams confessed to shaking the child to make her stop.
Williams was arrested and charged with assault and taken to the Hardin County Detention Center.
"I know for a fact he didn't do nothing like that," said Chrishonda Squire, a neighbor, "he's a really good friend of mine."
Williams sister says his confession was coerced by police.
"They said if you tell us something we will let you go back to your daughter," she said, "…my brother was trying to get back to his baby, his baby was in intensive care, my brother wanted to get back to her."
The Jefferson County Corners' Office pronounced Aleyah dead on Wednesday. Elizabethtown police say additional charges are pending.
