PORT CLINTON, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Public officials in Port Clinton received some nasty hate-mail – so nasty, that police are looking for the person who sent it.

Earlier this week, all five members of the Port Clinton city council received identical letters with a typed message that police say was full of obscenities, sexual remarks, and rants on politics.

The letters have been sent to the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and Port Clinton police are investigating.

Although not directly threatening, police said the malicious intent of the letters falls under the charge "menacing by stalking."

"Council members are concerned, obviously," said Sgt. Corbin Carpenter, a Port Clinton Police detective. "It's not every day that you get a disgruntled citizen that takes it upon themselves to conduct themselves in this manner. They take office to try to help, and then when they get something like this, it is a concern for them. And it is a concern for us, and we're going to take it very serious."

Sgt. Carpenter issued a response to the author Friday.

"I commend anyone that takes an interest in their community, but only when they conduct themselves in a manner that is constructive and legal," Carpenter said in his response.
