Lucas County infants need more foster parents

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Lucas County Children Services is putting out the call for more people to consider being foster parents for infants.

Executive Director Dean Sparks says many people who contact the agency are looking to adopt an infant, rather than caring on a temporary basis.

"We don't have enough foster homes in our own network to care for babies. We have a great need for people who are willing to care for kids temporarily while we work with their parents to try to rectify whatever problems they have," said Sparks.

Sparks says to become a foster parent, you must be at least 21 years old and have a place to accommodate a child.

"You can't have a history of child abuse or neglect and you have to have an income to support yourself so you're not relying on the stipend we provide," explained Sparks.

Paulina Daniel has been caring for two young girls for the past year, after receiving a call to become a foster parent.

"I worked at a nursery school for several years. Now I'm in another field, which I see firsthand how destructive abuse and neglect can be for children," said Daniel.

While Daniel is being mom for now, she realizes some day the girls could be returned to their family.

"I had to take a step back and say, ‘You're serving them'. That's the way I look at it. I'm a servant and I have to separate my emotions and look at it's about the children," said Daniel.
