PEKIN, IN (WAVE) - Survivor's guilt haunted Jason Miller throughout 2012. The man who tried to save a baby in a deadly storm is still healing from the tornado outbreak that killed a family of five and seriously injured Miller.
Miller is the only person who survived when he and the Babcock family took shelter during the March 2 tornado outbreak. His neighbors, Joe Babcock, 21, and Moriah Brough, 20, and their children, two-year-old Jaydon, two-month-old Kendall, and 15-month-old Angel all died.
One year later, Miller is stronger. His arm is free from a cast or sling, but even in recent months he's encountered setbacks. "I have six screws broken off inside my arm," he said. "The plate broke off."
Broken bones didn't break Miller, but the pain of losing the family he loved so much is an everyday challenge.
He wrapped his arms around 15-month-old Angel who was found crying in a field after the twister. She was taken off life support two days after the storm.
"There was a certain responsibility I took upon myself by bringing them into my house," Miller said.
Miller believes there's a reason he survived and is committed to spreading a message of preparing before a storm. "You need to have a safe place to go," Miller said. "Know your neighbors. Find out who will let you use a basement or a storm shelter, anything like that, in a moment's notice.
Miller admits healing is a work in progress, and he is grateful for the Babcock's relatives. "Their family has been incredibly kind to me," Miller said. "The reality is, things aren't going to be the same, but I'm a believer in God and know my faith will get me through."
Miller's family set up a fund to help offset medical expenses which continue to accumulate. Visit helpjason.org to contribute.
