ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (WAVE) - Six people were killed and five others were injured after two separate accidents on Interstate 65 near Elizabethtown on Saturday.
The crashes shut down I-65 in both directions for six hours. They reopened around 5 p.m. Saturday.
According to Hardin County Emergency Management Director Doug Finlay, both crashes happened around 11 a.m. – one in the northbound lanes, the other in the southbound lanes.
Finlay said the six people who were killed were involved in the crash on northbound I-65 near mile marker 81. Kentucky State Police say the victims are James Gollnow, 62, and his wife Barbara, 62; Marion Champnise, 92; Sarina Gollnow, 18; Soledad Smith, 8; and Gabriel Zumiga, 10.
State Police say they are from Wisconsin. They were traveling in a SUV that caught fire after it was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer.
Police said the two children in the SUV were foster children.
The two survivors were also foster children. Police identified them as Hope Hoth, 15, and Aidian Ejnik, 12.
That crash led four vehicles to crash in the Southbound lanes that injured three, one critically.
