LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A winter storm hitting the midwest is causing flight delays and cancelations in Louisville, Cincinnati and Lexington.

Most of the cancelations and delays are for flights headed to or coming from Chicago. Trish Burke, spokesperson for Louisville International Airport said all Southwest, United and American Airlines flights to and from Midway and O' Hare airports were canceled.

"Really, anytime there's extreme weather in certain areas, the airlines have just decided it makes sense to keep both the passengers and the aircraft out of harms way and just cancel the flight," said Burke.

Earlier Tuesday night, Cincinnati had grounded nearly 40 flights.

Louisville International Airport also was seeing some delays and cancelations from Minneapolis, but travelers from Chicago easily had the biggest headache, trying to figure out what's coming next for them. They say they are used to it.  "Bad weather, school is canceled, but that's Chicago," said Chicago traveler Brian Bennett.

Burke said it's always a good idea to check for flight delays and cancelations at www.flylouisville.com. If you need to rebook your flight she says, just call your airline directly.

Louisville Metro Police Chief Steve Conrad has asked his men and women to wear mourning bands for a former officer shot in the line of duty.  It was more than four decades ago when Detective Bobby Branham was critically wounded.  His widow, Mary Carroll Burnett tells us, her husband had a lot of scar tissue from multiple surgeries after the 1972 shooting and those complications led to his death May 14.
