Parents formally charged with abusing newborn

ELIZABETHTOWN, KY (WAVE) – The parents of a newborn who investigators say was nearly starved to death and severely beaten were formally charged on Friday.

Alexander Irwin and Jessica Capponi of Elizabethtown are charged with assault and criminal abuse.

Doctors say the couple's three-month-old son weighed less than he did when he was born, had a skull fracture, broken ribs and bruises all over his body when police brought him to Kosair Children's Hospital in late February. The child has since been released to a foster family.

Irwin and Capponi were still in police custody on Friday.
