ROME, ITALY (WAVE) – A group of women
activists from around the world protested outside the Vatican on Tuesday as the
conclave of Cardinals gathered to begin the process of electing a new pope.
The women from Australia, the United
States and Great Britain want the Roman Catholic Church to allow women priests.
"Jesus did not exclude women," said
protester Miriam Duignan. "Jesus encouraged women and actively sought to
include them. So why do the cardinals, who are supposed to represent Jesus,
make a point of actively excluding women – of telling them to be quiet – and of
criminalizing anybody that speaks out in favor of women priests.?"
Groups such as Roman Catholic Womenpriests
ordain women to the priesthood, but they are not officially recognized by the
Roman Catholic Church.
