The incident happened at Valley Station Road and Deering Road just before 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Investigators were on the scene of the accident.
Police tape cordoned off an area from a building to the train.
LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – The Jefferson County Coroner's Office has identified the man who was hit and killed by a train in Valley Station Wednesday afternoon as Christopher Frazier, 21.
"We just heard the train with the horn," said Patty Avila, who lives near the accident scene.
For those who were nearby Valley Station and Deering Road Wednesday evening, seeing the aftermath of a deadly train accident is nothing short of horrific.
"It crushes my heart," said Avila.
Louisville Metro Police said they believe that just before 5 p.m., Frazier was walking on the tracks when he was hit by the train.
"He received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene," said Dwight Mitchell with the Louisville Metro Police Department. "The Louisville Metro Homicide unit is investigating at this time."
Family members said Frazier was walking home from the store after getting off work. They said he had just gotten off the phone with his girlfriend. The two welcomed a baby into the world in January.
"My kids are my world," said Avila. "It's just awful. His parents are probably just devastated, you know?"
Frazier's family said he crossed the tracks every day to get home, and they believe he was wearing headphones. The coroner said headphones were found around his neck.
"We'll just put the investigation together and try to piece together exactly what happened," Mitchell said. "This is a horrific accident, and I'm sure it is going to be horrific for the victim's family, and we obviously want to give them some closure."
