Zoo increases admission, charging for parking

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A family of five may have to shell out $10 more on their next zoo trip.

Non-members will be charged $5 for parking and an additional dollar for general admission.

"We don't like to raise fees, we don't want to do it. However, offset rising costs and keep the zoo looking nice for future generations so we're having to implement the parking fees and price increases," said Tom Kaferle, Assistant Zoo Director.

For now, the zoo is using the 'honor system' and will ask guests how many vehicles they've parked at the front entrance. "We are charging at the gate as they come in and we are working on a plan so that they will pay as they come in or pay on exit," Kaferle said.

General admission is $15.95 for adults and $11.50 for children.

Parking rates are expected to generate half a million dollars a year.
