Inmates at Estrella Jail get ready for performance

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

About 30 ladies at the Estrella jail are working hard on a performance that will take place at the end of the month.

The program will be open to the public.

It's called Journey Home, An Arts Experience, and it teaches the women to build personal skills and self-esteem. They do it by using movement, creative writing, storytelling and theater.

The goal is to prepare the women to leave jail and be confident in who they are.

Teniqua Broughton has worked with the Journey Home program for several years.

"There is no difference. We are on the outside, they are on the inside. We hurt, you hurt. But at the same time we're here to give you the tools so you do not have to return to this facility for something that you can change by your own choice," Broughton said.

"It's very encouraging. It teaches you to love yourself and appreciate who you are. We all make mistakes," said Brittany, who only wanted to be identified by her first name. She also participates in the program.

"At first I was sorry I got caught and I was still blaming everybody else and not only has the class helped, but church and finding God and getting back with God helped a lot, too," she added.

The women meet once a week for six weeks. Each session lasts four hours.

The performance will be at Estrella jail on March 30.
