NEW HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -

The New Haven Police Department arrested two men accused for breaking into a house late Monday night and assaulting the elderly homeowner. However, the two suspects told police they were sorry for committing the crime.

A homeowner told police that he was leaving his Clinton Avenue home to walk his dog around 11:45 p.m. when he noticed two men in his front yard.

The 71-year-old man ran back into his home, however the two men followed him inside. When the man told them to leave one of the suspects punched him in the face, police said.

Police said the suspects threw the elderly man around the living room and knocked him into the walls.

The noise from the incident woke both the homeowner's wife and his son-in-law, who was able to push the two men out the front door. The son-in-law locked the door and the two suspects ran away.

However, the two men returned to the home and the son-in-law went outside to tell them to leave or he would call police.

The son-in-law told police that one of the men repeatedly apologized for the crime and even got on his knees to beg for forgiveness.

The two men fled Pine Street and then headed to Atwater Street.

The elderly man, who suffered a swollen lip, was taken to an area hospital.

Officers followed the footsteps left in the snow by the suspects to a home on Atwater where they arrested Jimmy Ramirez, 31.

"I'm sorry ... I didn't mean to do it," Ramirez told police. "I blacked out."

In the same building, police located Angel Pagan, 19, and arrested him.

"What's the problem, we just went into the house," Pagan told police. "We said sorry."

Pagan and Ramirez were charged with home invasion, first-degree burglary, third-degree assault of an elderly person and criminal mischief.
