A night custodian at Amity Elementary School was arrested at work for reportedly having target practice with a .38 revolver in the basement.
Police say Brian McConnell, 32, brought the gun to the school on Thursday, located on Galbraith Road.
Deer Park Police Chief Michael Schlie said he and the district's superintendent went to the school and talked to McConnell, where they found shot up phonebooks in a concrete room in the basement. Schlie said it appeared as McConnell had finished cleaning up the school and then began practicing his shot.
McConnell was charged with possessing a firearm on school grounds. Schlie says the grand jury may add more charges later.
On Friday, he was released from jail after meeting the requirements for a $100,000 secured bond. The case will go to a grand jury.
McConnell has no previous criminal record, according to police.
Schlie called the incident a 'stupid, bonehead mistake,' and adds that McConnell seems to be well liked around the school and is not seen as violent.
