LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - Now that Ashley Judd has announced she will not run for U.S. Senate in Kentucky against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, opting to focus on her family instead, a new crop of potential candidates is popping up.

Judd's announcement came as a disappointment to some of her Democratic supporters who say the actress' star power could have energized the race. On the other hand, with Judd out of the spotlight, other potential candidates may have an opportunity to shine.

Progress Kentucky, a group committed to voting McConnell out of office, is trying to entice several possible candidates to come forward. It's circulating petitions for seven different potential McConnell opponents. They are:

  • Kentucky Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes
  • Rep. John Yarmuth
  • Gov. Steve Beshear
  • Former Kentucky Lt. Gov. Daniel Mongiardo
  • David Adams, former campaign manager for Sen. Rand Paul
  • Louisville business leader Matthew Bevin
  • John T. Kemper III, a leader of the United Kentucky TEA Party.

Progress Kentucky Executive Director Shawn Reilly said it's time to move on from Judd. "With her background, she could raise a lot of money," Reilly said. "She has huge name recognition and so some of the other candidates may not have been looking at the race as seriously. She may have been freezing them out."

Reilly continued, "Before Ashley Judd decided she was not going to run, there had been a lot of media attention on her, and she had been getting a lot of people signing her petition. Now that she is out, we want to see where the support is for their other candidates."
