Reds' Ludwick undergoes shoulder surgery

Reds clean-up hitter Ryan Ludwick underwent surgery on Wednesday after injuring his shoulder on Opening Day.

Originally called a dislocated shoulder, the Reds announced on Tuesday that an MRI revealed Ludwick needed surgery on his right shoulder to repair torn cartilage.

On Wednesday morning, Ludwick underwent surgery to repair the torn labrum in his right shoulder.

Ludwick injured the shoulder while head first sliding into third base on Monday against the L.A. Angels.

"Just trying to be aggressive," Ludwick said after Monday's game. "Ground was a little wet and when I slid head first my hand hit the ground and it stopped, and my shoulder popped out a little bit."

He will be placed on the 15-day disabled list and will be replaced on the roster by OF Derrick Robinson, from Class AAA Louisville. Officials say Opening Night will be Robinson's Major League debut.
