Musicians come together to benefit sick child's fight

Friends and musicians came together this week to raise money for the family of a 15-month-old boy facing a tough medical fight.

Levi Smith's parents have been waiting months for a liver transplant for their son. It's been a long and stressful wait.

Levi's body is being attacked on all fronts. It's difficult for his mother Andrea to watch.

"Every day he is getting worse. He needs blood transfusions. He's on nine different medications. His general health is getting worse and worse," said Andrea Smith.

Levi is under the care of physicians at Children's Hospital in Ohio, where a liver transplant would be performed. It's the wait, and their son's worsening condition, that is hard for Levi's parents to take.

Getting to the top of the transplant list is all a numbers game based on medical need. In Levi's case, that need gets more acute everyday.

"The higher his score, the more likely he will receive a transplant. It also means his health is getting worse," Smith said.

Smith has been identified as a perfect liver match for her son. However, the procedure she would need to go through to save her son could put her life in danger.

"They might let me do it. They might not. Doctors are very concerned the procedure could take my blood supply away from my liver during surgery. I think what makes me want to do it is the fact that its very hard to watch my son suffer all the time," said Smith.

A concert Wednesday at Third and Lindsley in downtown Nashville that included Keith Urban's guitarist raised money for the family.
