Roswell designer helps women pack heat in style

A Roswell woman is helping women look good while protecting themselves on the street.

Leslie Deets is designing handgun handbags that she calls Concealed Carrie.

Each purse has a separate concealed-carry compartment that securely conceals the handgun in a safe and accessible manner, according to the company's website.

The FBI reports 2.5 million gun background checks were performed in January, up 80 percent from last January, and many of them were for women.

"Being the self-proclaimed fashionista I am, I studied the current trends in women's high-end handbags and concluded that demand would be high for a concealed-carry option that offered the utmost in both style and quality of material," said Deets on her website.

CBS Atlanta News asked Deets if she has any advice for women who are considering taking a gun class or purchasing their first gun.

Deets said the first question a woman, or any individual, should ask is, "Am I willing to take the necessary steps to defend myself with a firearm?"

"Women want to feel more empowered. We live during dangerous times. Just turn on the television and you will see the abundance of crimes between perpetrators and the victims that they choose," said Deets.

She also explained that gun ownership and participation isn't for everyone. Knowledge is empowerment, and safety is essential.

The company is now working on a less expensive line called, "Carries Closet" which will interest a broader demographic.
