LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A car slammed into a house sending the driver to the hospital and injuring a family's dog. The accident happened minutes after one of the homeowners went to a different part of their home.

According to St. Matthews police, the crash happened around 7:51 a.m. Friday in the 200 block of Hubbards Lane, near Churchill Road.

Rick Caswell and his wife were beginning their morning routine when a driver in a black Mercedes Benz veered off Hubbards Lane, across a yard and into the corner of their house. "I honestly thought it was a natural gas explosion," he said.

The driver may have suffered a medical episode. Caswell said he just left that part of the house to make coffee when he heard the accident.

"I finished my breathing treatment and went to the kitchen. Otherwise, I would've been right there where the car came in," Caswell said.

Caswell and his wife were not injured, but their dog suffered a puncture wound. The couple transported their pet to a veterinarian immediately following the accident. "Unfortunately, my dog was in the room and was hurt pretty bad but the vet said it'll be ok."

The driver of the car was also taken to an area hospital. His condition has not been released.
