Kentucky hemp bill waiting for ban to overturn

Posted: Updated:

FRANKFORT, KY (WAVE) - A bill that sets up a process to grow hemp in Kentucky will become law even without the governor's signature.

Gov. Steve Beshear said Friday that he supports efforts to create additional money-making crops for farmers, but does have concerns that growing hemp might impact police efforts to bust marijuana growers.

Since Beshear didn't veto the bill, it becomes Kentucky law. The governor noted the federal government still has to act to make the crop legal.

Hemp was a major cash crop in Kentucky until it became illegal in the 1930s. Kentucky's U. S. lawmakers said they're working with the federal government to overturn the ban.
