BOWLING GREEN, OH (Toledo News Now) -
Members of the Black Student Union at BGSU are speaking out after a recent string of racially-charged comments rocked the campus - and now university officials are getting involved.
The tweets started Thursday night, with one Bowling Green University student complaining about black students hanging out at Ziggy's, a local bar.
"We were just having a good time...There was no confrontation between anybody, either black or white," said Tiffany Smith, President of the BGSU Black Student Union. "The next thing you know, you're being called the 'n' word, people are saying they want to take a shower after being at Ziggys."
The Twitter posts read "It got dark real fast," and "F- you black girl." These caught the attention of other students, some who agreed with her, and many others who were shocked and offended by her comments.
The tweets eventually caught the attention of members of the Black Student Union at BGSU. Someone there saved the tweets and brought them to the attention of university officials, then sent them to WTOL 11.
BGSU President Mary Ellen Mazey then issued this statement:
"All across campus we work hard to uphold the core values of the university…The actions of the students involved is not condoned, nor acceptable. The incident is under investigation."
