US-23 construction detours drivers

MONROE COUNTY, MI (Toledo News Now) -

Aconstruction project in Monroe County could cause some delays for driverstrying to get to the Toledo area.

Thesouthbound ramp to US-23 from US-223 is shut down starting Monday. Drivers willhave to follow a detour.

Eventually, the interchange will be redesigned into a roundabout, but the first step isrepairing the ramps.

Driversare being routed to northbound US-23, all the way up to the Summerfield Roadexit. That's where they're advised to turn around and then get on southboundUS-23. The detour adds 10-15 minutes to their commute, and some drivers say theconstruction isn't worth it.

"Ithought it was fine how it is," said Karl Schafer. "I don't see a need forchange."

Butothers disagree, saying the interchange needs to be improved.

Representativesfrom the Michigan Department of Transportation say the roundabout will improvetraffic flow and safety.

"Ifyou've been around them, they're not that hard," said driver Jim Beal.

Rampsto US-23 in that area will close one at a time, for about four weeks. Constructionof the actual roundabout is expected to start this summer.
