US-23 construction detours drivers

MONROE COUNTY, MI (Toledo News Now) -

A construction project in Monroe County could cause some delays for drivers trying to get to the Toledo area.

The southbound ramp to US-23 from US-223 is shut down starting Monday. Drivers will have to follow a detour.

Eventually, the interchange will be redesigned into a roundabout, but the first step is repairing the ramps.

Drivers are being routed to northbound US-23, all the way up to the Summerfield Road exit. That's where they're advised to turn around and then get on southbound US-23. The detour adds 10-15 minutes to their commute, and some drivers say the construction isn't worth it.

"I thought it was fine how it is," said Karl Schafer. "I don't see a need for change."

But others disagree, saying the interchange needs to be improved.

Representatives from the Michigan Department of Transportation say the roundabout will improve traffic flow and safety.

"If you've been around them, they're not that hard," said driver Jim Beal.

Ramps to US-23 in that area will close one at a time, for about four weeks. Construction of the actual roundabout is expected to start this summer.
