A 15-year-old Raymer Elementary student who admitted to bringing a loaded gun to school in March appeared in juvenile court Tuesday morning.
Lucas County Juvenile Prosecutor Lori Olander says the youth faces sentencing on two felony charges. He will be back in court April 25 for his sentencing. The most severe punishment he could receive is being sent to a youth correction facility until he is 21.
Olander says a police test firing of the gun proved it was a working handgun, but police were unable to trace the handgun to the student.
According to police, the student admitted to buying the .38 handgun from someone on the street. He never showed anyone the gun or made threats.
Police say school employees found the gun in the student's coat pocket while looking for a missing coat March 22. The school resource officer was immediately contacted and took the gun.
The teen is currently suspended, and officials at Raymer Elementary School have asked Toledo Public Schools to expel him.
After the gun was discovered, TPS sent out a recorded phone message to Raymer parents about the incident. Some parents were outraged. TPS officials say safety is their number one priority and believe their administration reacted properly to the incident.
