LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – Louisville Metro Police made at least 23 arrests in the overnight hours after hundreds of University of Louisville fans took to the streets to celebrate the Cardinals' first NCAA championship in 27 years.
Police reported large, disorderly crowds on the UofL campus, on West Broadway and on Baxter Avenue.
The arrests included 14 for alcohol intoxication/disorderly conduct, two for resisting arrest, one for receiving a stolen firearm, and one for wanton endangerment against a police officer.
Investigators said an LMPD officer suffered a head injury from a bottle that was thrown at his head. The officer was checked out by doctors at University Hospital.
Police wearing riot gear and an armored carrier were called in to quell the disturbance after the officer was injured.
In addition, a shooting was reported around 3 a.m. in the area of Dixie Highway and Garland Avenue. It is being handled as a division case, meaning the injury likely is not life-threatening. It was not immediately clear whether the shooting stemmed from the Cardinals celebration.
