Public celebration for UofL teams coming, but not on Wednesday

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – The city of Louisville and the University of Louisville are working on plans for a parade and community celebration for both the men and women's Cardinal basketball teams, but the event will not happen on Wednesday as had been rumored, according to Mayor Greg Fischer's office.

The date and time of the event will depend on several factors, including when both teams and their coaches will be in Louisville at the same time, according to the mayor's spokesperson, Chris Poynter.

Meanwhile, the Cardinal men are headed home from Atlanta after winning the 2013 NCAA National Championship Monday night at the Georgia Dome.

UofL Athletic Director Kenny Klein confirmed the team's 1 p.m. Tuesday departure from Atlanta. It is expected to arrive at the executive airport at Standiford Field between 2:15 and 2:30 p.m. Klein said neither the public nor the media would have access to the team.

The UofL men wanted to travel to New Orleans to watch the Cardinal women take on UConn Tuesday night in the fight for the NCAA National Women's Championship, Klein said, but UofL decided against it, deeming such travel an "extra benefit." Klein said by the time the NCAA offered to expedite a waiver to allow the travel, plans for the men to return to Louisville had been finalized.
