NEW ORLEANS, LA (WAVE) – After pulling off four wins considered upsets, the University of Louisville Cardinals were unable to comeback against UConn in the NCAA women's national championship game.
The Huskies won their eighth national title and ended the Cardinals title hopes with a 93-60 win Tuesday night in New Orleans. The 33 point victory was the largest winning margin in the title game.
Breanna Stewart scored 23 points for UConn. Sara Hammond had 15 for the Cardinals and was the only UofL player to reach double figures. Shoni Schmimel had nine.
The title win tied UConn head coach Geno Auriemma with former Tennessee coach Pat Summitt for the most championships in the history of women's basketball.
The Cardinals finish the season 29-9.
In their previous title game appearance in 2009, Louisville also lost to UConn.
