LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The celebration inside the KFC Yum! Center lasted about 90 minutes. Fans packed the plaza to get inside at when the doors opened at 3:30 p.m. for the 5 p.m. event. Two women we talked to said they waited about half an hour to get inside; a wait they were not complaining about.

"Not at all. We just sat outside and talked to people, watched people and checked out shirts," they said.

Police and dozens of arena workers were on hand for the special event. That includes Hazel Owens, who has worked at the KFC Yum! Center since it opened. Before that, Owens was at Freedom Hall.

"I love it, I love it, I love it," Owens exclaimed. "I just love people."

But the Cards celebration Wednesday was unlike any other she's worked.

"Oh yeah!  It's a lot of fun," she said with a smile.

For Dr. James Ramsey, the University of Louisville president, it all seems like a dream.

"It's just hard to believe," said Ramsey. "I've got to pinch myself and say did this really happen?"

Like most of Kentuckiana cheering for two teams, he's still catching his breath.

"We went to Oklahoma City last Tuesday, came back on Wednesday, then we were in Atlanta and New Orleans and Atlanta and New Orleans and back to Louisville today," Ramsey said. "It's been great."

Among the crowd of thousands inside the KFC Yum! Center was Denny Crum, the longtime Cards coach who led the team to titles in 1980 and 1986.

"It's been too long," said Crum. "It's been 27 years since they've won a national championship so it's overdue."

As far as this win, Crum said he's happy just to sit back and celebrate the hard work of the champions.

"I can tell you it's not easy to do," said Crum. "Everything has to become perfect, but give them credit they earned it and I'm just happy to say I was a fan and I was there when they celebrated and was just a part of it."
