PHOENIX (CBS5) -

CBS 5 News has obtained the audio-taped recording of a Phoenix businessman allegedly plotting to kill his wife.

Phoenix police said on Jan. 14, 2012 Fred Knadler tried to hire one of his employees at Arizona Shower Door to do the job.

Patrick King told police he knew Knadler's wife, Libia, had recently filed for divorce and wanted millions of dollars.

He had a feeling his boss was going to ask him to help him kill her.

So, when Fred Knadler requested a "super secret" meeting, King brought along a tape recorder - which captured a deadly plot.

"I've got a super secret situation I want to discuss with you," said Knadler.

That was his segue into discussing a side job he had for King.

"I've got $10,000 I was gonna give you, just right up front," said Knadler.

Knadler went on to reveal his plot.

"Go dig a hole in the desert somewhere," Knadler said.

He also told King he would need him to get rid of his wife's car.

"Driving it somewhere there is a lot of Mexicans or something - a ghetto area," Knadler suggested.

King responded, "Oh, so someone will take it."

Knadler also told King to remove the license plate and disable the car's GPS system.

As for the hole King was to dig, Knadler told him, "All you have to do, I will give you a bundle to put in that hole. So, I'm not going to tell you what's gonna be the bundle. It will be wrapped in a blanket or a sheet or something."

King then baited Knadler to tell him more.

"Uh, Libby has filed for divorce," confides Knadler. "She wants $2.3 million."

Knadler continued to spill - complaining to King his wife was now carrying on a separate life of her own.

"I don't know what she does and uh, maybe, she's got a boyfriend somewhere," Knadler speculates. "You would have to wear gloves. You can't leave any fingerprints."

Returning to the task at hand, Knadler told King he wants to get rid of his wife soon.

"What I was trying to do is get this out of the way before she spends more time with her attorney," Knadler explained.

King played along - discussing the different desert areas he'd scout and how deep he'd dig the hole.

"Well, there's a little something for you," said Knadler as he handed King a wad of cash.

King responded, "Wow. A thousand bucks! I've never seen it like that."

Knadler told King, "Well, I gotta be able to trust you, cause I don't wanna go to jail for the rest of my life either."

That same day, Jan. 14, 2012, King turned the tape and the $1,000 Knadler gave him over to police.

Knadler has been in jail since then, awaiting trial.

In addition to his initial plot, police tell CBS 5 News in February Knadler tried to hire an undercover detective, he believed was a hit man, to kill his wife and King - from behind bars.

Knadler now faces three counts of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder and one count of conspiring to conceal a dead body.

A pretrial conference, in his case, is set for Tuesday, April 16.

Calls to Knadler's attorney were not returned.
