BARDSTOWN, KY (WAVE) – A Nelson County woman is behind bars after investigators say she shot and killed her boyfriend.

James Thomas III, who goes by Marcy, was found shot to death in Susan Marlow's driveway. It didn't take the Nelson County Sheriff's Office long to arrest her and charge her with murder.

A neighbor, who does not want her identity known, has lived on Plum Run Road for decades.

"It's totally unexpected," said the neighbor. "Nothing like this has ever happened in our little neighborhood."

Not far away, Thomas, 51, was lying in the driveway of the home of his long time girlfriend, Marlow. Nelson County Sheriff Stephen Campbell said Thomas was shot twice. Campbell it all stems from domestic violence.

"It's our understanding that it was an on again off again relationship," said Campbell. "Evidently we have responded to that residence in the past."

In fact, court documents show Marlow took out an Emergency Protective Order against Thomas in 2008.

It's something that's shocking to this neighbor, who has spent time with both of them.

"I think she is a good neighbor," she said. "He's been over here several times. I've met him, he would laugh and cut up, just a regular kind of guy."

It's still unclear what led up to the shooting, but the neighbor can't help but feel sad for all involved.

"Two families are ruined," she said. "I feel sorry for both of their families. I mean he's gone and he will never be back and more or likely she won't be either."

Marlow does have a criminal history dating back to 1997. She has faced charges for drugs, theft, and assault. She is currently in the Nelson County Jail charged with murder.
