Mad dash on to beat tax deadline

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - The tax deadline is April 15, but don't let the mad dash lead to big mistakes. Tax experts caution last-minute filers to pay special attention to ensure an error-free return.

General Tax Tips:

  • Gather all necessary tax documents
  • File electronically – A tax return done through E-file is faster, more accurate, and safer.
  • Do not overlook any deductions and credits – Consider changes to tax law and any life changes that may drive new tax benefits.
  • Consider requesting an extension- If you are unable to complete your taxes by the deadline, filing an extension can help you  postpone your return until October 15, 2013.
  • Make sure your return is signed and dated and all schedules and supporting documents are enclosed.

Post Office tips :

  • If depositing returns in a collection box on Monday, April 15, double-check the pick-up schedule on the label. Deposit returns before the last scheduled pick-up time.
  • Affix the appropriate postage, if he item weighs more than an ounce., it could require additional postage.
  • The USPS highly recommends getting the security of proof of mailing and proof of delivery of your tax returns - use certified mail service with a return receipt, plus the applicable postage).
