WALTON, Ky. (AP/FOX19) -
Kentucky's auditor says the city of Walton illegally paid bonuses to employees with funds acquired from selling scrap metal.
The Kentucky Enquirer reports (http://bit.ly/12je8pr) that auditor also concluded the city used funds to buy gifts for employees, council members and the mayor. Among the gifts were gift cards, hams and a cookie bouquet.
According to the auditor's office, City Clerk Peggy Gray and Public Works Supervisor Roger Williams said the scrap metal was sold for cash to a local recycling center. Gray distributed the money among employees as bonuses in 2009, 2010 and 2011. There is no record of the items sold or the amount of the bonuses paid.
Mayor Phillip Trzop said the audit is not "a bad thing" and shows the city needs to tighten its procedures.
Trzop was indicted in Boone County while he was the general manager of the Water District. He's accused of generating cash by selling scrap metal belonging to the water district and using the money to pay for employee bonuses and keeping some for himself.
Trzop says the two cases are unrelated.
