FRANKFORT, KY (WAVE) - A would-be bank robber was captured by some unlikely heroes.

According to Frankfort police, on Tuesday morning, Steven Higgs robbed the PNC Bank inside the Kroger in Frankfort's Franklin Square.

Higgs got some money, then took off toward the back of the store, but the store was under construction and he could not find an open door.

Store employees tackled him, thinking he was a shoplifter until he dropped a plastic grocery bag filled with cash.

Frankfort Police Major Fred Deaton said, "The actions of the employees and the construction workers is a very conscientious and courageous act which led us to clear this bank robbery and apprehend the perpetrator."

Higgs ended up charged with more than the alleged robbery. Louisville Metro police have been looking for Higgs and his brother John Higgs, dubbed the bank robbing brothers, since 2012 when they were accused of holding up a bank on Bardstown Road.

Frankfort police said Steven Higgs acted alone during the Frankfort robbery. John Higgs is currently in custody in a New York prison.
