SCOTT COUNTY, IN (WAVE) - A man found guilty in the murder of his ex-wife was sentenced to more than five decades behind bars.

Wednesday afternoon Robert Petty was given the maximum sentence of 56 years in prison for the death of Nina Keown, 26.

Before the sentencing, the court heard testimonies from Keown's mother, Debra Conover, Robert Petty's father, Jerry Petty, and Petty himself who stated, "I'm not proud of the person I've been. I'm prouder of the person I am now. I'm not proud of the things I've done, I'm ashamed of myself in many ways."

After the sentencing Petty's father said he knew Robert Petty to be was a good hearted, smart and caring man and said it has been difficult to sit through his son's trial, "Well I feel like he's got to do some time, pay for what he did but I sure don't believe he deserves what they're trying to throw at him."

Keown was last seen in August 2010 on her way to a music festival in Scott County.

Prosecutors said Petty murdered Keown and dumped her body in a wooded area.

In February Petty was found guilty of manslaughter, removing a body from a scene, obstruction of justice and being a persistent felony offender.
